The truth is: football alone is not enough for our young African players.

Across Africa, thousands of young boys and girls enter football academies carrying big dreams. They dream of playing professionally, representing their countries, playing in Europe, and perhaps becoming the next Ronaldo or Messi.

But what are we promising these young people?

Are we giving them the impression that everyone who enters an academy will become a professional footballer? Are we preparing them only for the next match, or are we preparing them for life?

The reality is that only a small proportion of young players will eventually build sustainable professional football careers. So we have a responsibility to prepare every child not only for the possibility of success in football, but also for a meaningful future beyond football.

Coaches must talk about more than football

For many young players, their coach is one of the most trusted and influential people in their lives.

That gives coaches an enormous responsibility.

Tell them about the importance of education.

Tell them that their identity and future are bigger than football.

Teach them discipline, character, responsibility and leadership.

Help them understand that one day competitive football will end—but the knowledge, character, relationships and skills they develop through education can continue serving them for the rest of their lives.

Some of today’s academy players may become professional footballers. Others may become teachers, entrepreneurs, engineers, civil servants, coaches, community leaders, pastors or political leaders.

All of them need preparation for life.

This is why AGR Ltd chose a different path

At Ambassadors Group Rwanda Ltd, we came to understand that developing football talent without developing the whole person is not enough.

So we began supporting talented young players to access education alongside football development.

Last Friday was a beautiful reminder of why this matters.

We celebrated 24 young people graduating from high school after being supported through this journey.

Today, 4 of them are already studying at university, and 3 are playing in Rwanda’s First Division.

Was investing in their education the right decision?

Absolutely.

Because our responsibility is not simply to produce footballers. It is to help develop young men and women who are prepared for life—whether their journey takes them onto a professional football pitch or into a completely different calling.

We should never promise a young player that football is all they need.

Instead, let us give them football as an opportunity, education as a foundation, faith as a compass, and the preparation they need for their future.
